great food you can trust

I've been asked a number of times about whether we'll be selling cigarettes - the answer's no, as it doesn't fit with what we're trying to do.

Our aim is to make fresh, high quality food affordable and accessible to everyone, because that's what people told us they wanted. Said quickly, it sounds simple, but as ever, it's all in the doing.

For a start, we're being be very thoughtful about the way we source, develop and distribute our own brand products. For example, we have a team of technical managers working with our suppliers to ensure that all our own brand products have no added transfats, no artificial colors or flavors, and only use artificial preservatives where they're absolutely essential or traditionally part of the product. And we're designing a supply chain to ensure that as little time as possible is used up in the distribution of fresh products, leaving the product much fresher instore

Then, to make these products affordable for everyone, we're trying to create a business that is simple to operate. For example, we're carefully selecting our assortment of products based on what we've learnt. It makes it easier to find the product you want in-store, but it also means higher volumes per line which in turn reduces costs throughout the supply chain, allowing us to charge lower prices

Finally, to make it accessible as well as affordable, we have a huge effort underway to try and find suitable sites in every neighborhood - and our initial pipeline of stores includes areas which have traditionally been underserved by food stores.

After all why shouldn't everyone have access to fresh, affordable, high quality food...

I hear you are opening a market in Phoenix, AZ. If I am correct, your store will definitely revitalize an area that really needs it and is underserved as far as grocery stores. I am so happy to hear that!
All I want is FRESH ORGANIC produce at a reasonable cost. It seems I always have to sacrifice one or the other when I buy organic produce. I would especially like to see organic soft fruits: grapes, peaches, strawberries, etc. If you can do that I will be very Happy!!

The evolution of supermarkets has been very slow in this country. That is why new retailers which have popped up have targeted a niche demographic. With Fresh & Easy, they are aiming for everyone; health concious, working moms, professionals who are cash-rich, but time poor. UK supermarkets are well known for the quality of their prepared meals which are chilled, not frozen and I think if F&E can emulate that quality and variety seen its UK stores, F&E's private label will be the talk of the town.

As you are not selling cigarettes, what about beer, chips & Coke? Where do you draw the line?

I just wanted to say I LOVE LOVE LOVE the new market opened on December 12 in Orange, Ca. It is where I will be doing ALL of my shopping from now on. I have been shopping there weekly since you opened. We needed a GREAT store like this in our neighborhood. Prior to your store coming here we only had a Ralphs in the neighborhood (overpriced and the produce is garbage!) So far I have been delighted with EVERY product I have tried. Your meats are wonderful as are you prepared foods such as your Mango Chicken and Burritos. I can already see the difference in my food budget. My average shopping trip is about $70 at your store...I used to shop TJ's and my average there was $100-120 per trip. Anyway I wanted to say thanks for a GREAT store. I am thrilled with everything! And as to cigarettes...WHO NEEDS CIGARETTES in a market like Fresh and Easy when you can buy those at any gas station, liquor store or other market. Its all about the food at Fresh and Easy and you have definitely deleivered on the promise of excellence!
