magical moments at fresh & easy

Time's a funny thing. It seems a lifetime ago we were showing customers around our mock store, seeing if we'd understood what they'd told us correctly. Now, November seems to be hurtling towards us, when we'll be opening our first fresh&easy stores.

It's an amazingly exciting time. Many different strands of the business we're building are now coming together, and we're finding out whether they're a perfect fit. Needless to say, as with any building project, we're having to make some adjustments.

It may only be a food store, but memorable moments just keep coming. So far this month for example, we've seen our first outdoor sign lit up (LED of course), our first store being handed over to our store personnel to get ready for launch, or our first product being delivered to our depot.

But whilst these are major milestones in the setting up of the business, the real magical moments come from the people. The email from a construction guy exuding excitement about the LED sign that's just been installed, a buyer proudly demonstrating how their product has no artificial ingredients but still tastes great, a transport guy excitedly showing us round the energy-efficient & neighborhood friendly trailer he'd commissioned, a recent trainee extolling the virtues of our simple cash office process. You can just feel that we're on to something.

Retail businesses are about people. When people believe in what they do and enjoy what they do, they can do great things. Our challenge is to hold onto this as we recruit our customer assistants. If we do, fresh&easy will be something special. Whether we do, our employees and our customers will decide. And that, as ever, is how it should be.....

This blog is strongest when you’re describing what you’ve done, like the training week; weakest when you’re repeating company philosophy. Can we have more of what you do, day to day --- even the boring bits (“Three hours of Death by Powerpoint today...”, “The staff canteen ran out of sausages again!”).

It sounds like a lot is happening right now. How about a close up picture of one of the new signs, or a smiling (relieved!) exec accepting the keys of the first store? What do you feel when you see the invetory start to pile up in the distribution centre, what’s it like trialling the delivery routes with the first drivers? Othewise, good posts. Keep them up.

I am sooo excited for Fresh & Easy to present itself in the Fall 07! As a future customer, current shareholder, and believer in Tesco's entry into the USA, the convenience stores must wake up, shake up, and forget about slurpy's and beer! I am on the road, on the run, and to be able to have fresh, safe, and good service in a market is FRESH & EASY!

When are you actually going to open the store on Eagle Rock Blvd. in Los Angeles? We have been without a convenient store since Albertson's closed that site several years ago.

Hi Simon and folks! My name is Jay Cruz and I applied to work at your Warm Springs store in Las Vegas.

I've read through the company objectives, news and your blog here and wanted to comment that I love this idea! I like the fact that you have Tesco already established worldwide, attempting to implement some great standards in retail grocery.

I want to work in a place that is eco-friendly, as I'm an outdoor person myself. I also want to be in an environment which offers healthy choices around me everyday!

I always love seeing companies GO GREEN! I believe that private companies will be the ones to lead the examples and show governments new ideas of what is possible to protect our world.

There are so many food recalls lately in the headlines it is pretty scary. I want to know that the food I buy comes from a solid and eco-friendly source.

Keep up the good work!
(I am anxious to try your chicken salad :P)

Jay

I am excited to find you are opening in Las Vegas/Henderson. And i am interested in applying for employment. Your webpage does not show any Las Vegas opportunities. How do I apply?

I can't wait until you open the Las Vegas store near my house. Whilst other people are stupidly concerned with specific words you use (wait, next they'll be complaining that you spell things your way & not our way, because the US is the be-all and end-all of the universe), I can't wait for the secrecy to end, so I know what products you'll carry...and when the store near my house (Centennial Hills - Las Vegas) will open. Use all the British English you want, it's your company (which, Mr. Anonymous, is a British company) - I just want good food, and soon.
