on the road with fresh & easy
A whirlwind few weeks.
Last tuesday Tim, Hugh, Bryan (who runs our stores) & I were sitting in LAX at 5.30am, with a Starbucks in our hand.
We were flying to Phoenix in order to launch our first fresh&easy stores there, having already launched in southern California and Las Vegas , as well as fitting in a week showing investors and media around our business.
We looked like some kind of ageing rock band on the last leg of a tour! (I always was a fan of Spinal Tap!)
In each place, we first held a rally with our people, to tell the story of fresh&easy and describe the kind of business we're trying to create. Then a reception in a store, to thank the civic leaders and our local suppliers for welcoming us to their community. Finally, the next morning, opening ceremonies in each of our stores, thanking people for welcoming us to their neighborhood, and giving a donation to a local charity - itself nominated by the neighborhood.
It's been a fantastic experience so far. I've met so many people (talked myself hoarse at times), and everyone's been so friendly and excited.
But now the hard work really starts.
We have real stores, with real customers and employees...and we're adding stores every week.
Every week we're learning what does and doesn't work.
Every week we have more and more suggestions from customers and employees, telling us how we can improve.
With our opening tour at an end, we can now focus on doing just that......and that's how it should be...

As a team member working in a new Arizona store, I would love to see and hear more about our Arizona stores.
We opened December 19th and have exactly 2 business days under our belt!
I just read about Fresh & Easy's gift card recycling program. Sounds great! One question, will Fresh & Easy be giving a donation--matching or otherwise--to the American Forests program, in addition to the donations that customers make?

I've been hearing rumors about problems with environmental issues at the Riverside distribution centers and that there is a threat the county could shut down the facility. Has anyone else heard about this?
The facility in Riverside is the most green warehouse that I have ever been in. I have over a decade within the wholesale food industry and I have been inside other retailer's DC's and they do not even come close to the green technology employeed at the facility. 1- The largest Solar Panel Array in the Western Hemisphere. That electricity then powers battery operated forklifts and lighting. All major lighting uses motion sensors and shuts off when no one is in the area, All our delivery trucks can plug into the facility's elecrtical power instead of using their trucks ideling off of diesel fuel leaving harmful particulates in the air and additional engine noise. Anyway, don't worry, they are the cleanest and greenest in the USA if not the world.
Just had our first visit to the Arizona store on 35th and Greenway.
We enjoyed our quick visit and left with all we could carry!
The employee at the "Food" sample station was very positive and informative. We could immediately recognized that the pricing of items are lower than another local grocery stores! I will pay a bit more for having a pleasant shopping atmosphere. The bigger chains dont always have enough stock anyways. We purchased a F&E chocolate Fudge brownie, it was so yummy!
We are looking forward to eating the chicken and Angus steak we purchased!
We look forward for more chains to open closer to Peoria Az.
My husband is from Oxford England and he is going to like Fresh and Easy for sure!
Thank you!
