from hollywood to compton, everyone's welcome at fresh & easy

Yesterday was very special.

We opened our brand new store in Compton, the first quality food store to be built there for 20yrs.

It may have been our 43rd store opening, but it was really touching.

Why?

It wasn't that Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, opened it for us, welcome though he was.

Nor was it just the kind words of Yvonne Burke or Eric Perridon, the mayor of Compton, proud though they made us feel.

It was simply the 200 or so people who came in when we finally opened the doors. They made us feel so welcome... one gentleman even presented us with a series of photographs he had taken of the store in various stages of construction.

We're not of course a charity, but we do believe that everyone deserves access to fresh, wholesome food they can afford. In our experience, if that's what you offer, in a clean environment with friendly service, people will shop with you, wherever you go.

Whether that remains true, we'll find out over time, as people vote with their feet.

In the meantime, the people of Compton now have access to fresh, wholesome food that they can afford. And that's how it should be...

There was a report earlier today on Yahoo business citing an industry consultant saying that the results are showing Fresh & Easy is missing their weekly sales volume projections on a store basis. I believe the initial projections back in November were $200,000 a week per store but so far the actuals are closer to $50,000-$60,000. To me this indicates an awareness and foot traffic issue which doesn't seem is getting addressed. I'm interested to hear what the Fresh & Easy response is and if there are any future plans to increase advertising and marketing efforts.

Just read a pretty good article here about Fresh & Easy. Is worth reading for management.

I agree, if you want to make your numbers, slow down the opening of stores and create awareness and foot traffic for the stores you already have open. I have shopped a one of the stores and found the offerings and prices very reasonable. Just don't put so much mayo in the chicken salad...
