"I am very happy that my bag design is available in
stores! It will be exciting to see my friends and family carrying
around something I helped create. I'm also hopeful that my
fun design will encourage customers to utilize reusable bags more
frequently rather than always using paper or plastic bags." - Eimi

Q&A with Eimi Marritt - 2012 Design-A-Bag
Winner
Q. What was your first reaction when you found out you
won the Design-A-Bag Contest?
A. I was really surprised. I was in Japan at the time and
was really happy!
Q. How long were you in Japan?
A. For about a month visiting family. I was actually
born there and moved to Las Vegas when I was thirteen.
I like how I get to wear flip-flops all year long in
Vegas!
Q. What was your inspiration to create this winning
design?
A. The inspiration for my design came from my favorite fruits I
buy at fresh&easy. I kept the background white as it allowed
the colors and splatter effect to pop. I wanted to create a
design that was simple and fresh, just like the store!
Q. How long did it take you to create your
design?
A. About 3 days. I took pictures of the fruits that my mom
bought at fresh&easy and then used Photoshop to create my
design.
Q. Your bag design is really modern and unique, how long
have you been an artist?
A. I took art classes and a graphic design class in high
school. Art is one of my favorite hobbies. I like to
draw, mostly with colored pencils. I usually copy from books
- if I see a recipe, I'll look at the picture and draw that.
I also like to draw people and since my grandpa likes landscapes, I
drew that for him when I was recently in Japan.
Q. Aside from art, what are a few of your other
hobbies?
A. I also like to swim, play badminton, watch movies and take
pictures.
Q. Do you use reusable bags when you go
shopping?
A. I usually go shopping with my mom and yes, she's always
carrying one.
Q. What's your favorite aspect of
fresh&easy?
A. I hadn't seen my fresh&easy store since I left for Japan
a month ago. I was just there and it looked different - I
really liked it. I saw some fresh peaches and a new pear
cider, which I can't wait to buy with my winnings.
Q. Congrats on just graduating high school! Any plans
for college?
A. Yeah, I'm going to University of Nevada, Reno to major in
Chemical Engineering. I didn't get any scholarships for
college so all the money I won from winning this contest will help
me pay for food when I move into the dorms.
Q. Anything else you'd like to add?
A. I want to thank my mom for not letting me give up. When
I first created the design and tried to submit it online, it didn't
work because the file was too large. I don't know much about
computers so I gave up at that point. However, my mom told me to
not give up. With her support, I figured out the solution and was
able to submit my design. If I gave up back then, I wouldn't
have won. I love you mom!
